The quick answer
Claude doesn’t edit video files on its own. What it does well is read your transcript and decide what to cut, what hook to open with, and what text goes on screen. Pair it with CapCut, which does the actual cutting and exporting, and you get a fast editing system. With Claude Code on a desktop, Claude can even write a CapCut project file for you to open and polish.

What Claude can and can’t do with video
Here’s what to look for before you set this up.
Can: read a transcript and flag dead air, stumbles, and repeated takes; write five hook options; draft on-screen text and captions; build a shot list; write titles, descriptions and hashtags.Can (with Claude Code): create or edit CapCut draft files on your computer, so you open CapCut to a first cut that already has captions and text on it.Can’t: watch your footage like a person, judge your lighting, or export a finished video. CapCut does that part.
There is no official Claude connector inside CapCut. The desktop route works through files and community tools, not a button in the app.

Workflow 1: the no-code version (works for anyone)
Film your clip and drop it into CapCut.
Generate captions in CapCut, then export or copy the transcript.
Paste the transcript into Claude with a prompt like: “Here is my raw transcript. List every section to cut (stumbles, repeats, dead air) with timestamps, then give me 5 hook options under 10 words.”
Make the cuts in CapCut following Claude’s list.
Ask Claude for the on-screen text and caption copy, then paste it in.
The decisions (what to cut, what to say first) are made before you touch the timeline, and that’s where most editing time goes.
Workflow 2: the desktop version (Claude Code + CapCut)
Creators are now pointing Claude Code at their CapCut project folders so Claude builds the first draft directly. The setup that works:
Install CapCut desktop and Claude Code on the same computer.
Teach Claude where CapCut stores your projects (a one-time prompt).
Hand it your raw clip and transcript; it cuts the silences, places captions, and adds your hook text.
Open CapCut, review, polish, export.
Two rules designers recommend: quit CapCut before Claude edits a project, because CapCut overwrites the file when it closes, and back up the project folder before every edit.

FAQ
Can Claude edit videos?
Not directly. Claude plans the edit (cuts, hooks, captions) and, through Claude Code on a desktop, can write CapCut project files. CapCut does the cutting and exporting.
Does Claude work inside CapCut?
No. There’s no official integration. Claude works alongside CapCut through transcripts or, on desktop, through CapCut’s project files.
Do I need CapCut Pro to edit with Claude?
No for the no-code workflow. For the desktop route and auto captions, Pro is the plan that covers desktop, web and mobile together.
Is Claude better than ChatGPT for video editing?
Both can plan edits from a transcript. Claude Code is the tool creators are using to write CapCut project files directly, which is the bigger time saver.
