Quick answer: Here is the truth about an air purifier filter: within a few months of normal use, it visibly fills with dust, pet dander, pollen, and microscopic particles. That gunk is what you would otherwise be breathing all day. Once you see a working filter, the case for owning an air purifier stops being theoretical.
The most convincing argument for an air purifier filter is the filter itself, after a few months of running. Mine came out looking unrecognizable from the white-ish disc that went in. A quality HEPA-grade air purifier filter is engineered to trap a wide range of airborne particles, including:

Pre-filters that catch the largest particles can usually be rinsed and dried monthly to extend the life of the main filter. The fastest way to know it is time: look at it.
